The Old Way

Without Move Me or another third-party upgrade product, you would spend hours - or even days - on a "search, copy, and re-install" mission. First you search through gigabytes of data on your old hard drive, looking for your programs and the data files associated with them. Then you transfer the files you are able to locate to the new computer, perhaps using a file management program like Windows Explorer. And finally, you re-install all of your software applications onto the new computer (once you find the original disks or files you downloaded from the Internet and the products' serial numbers, of course).

Aside from the significant amount of time involved, there are a couple of big problems with this method. First, you are unlikely to find all of the data files created by your applications. If you have ever looked around on your hard drive for the address book associated with your email program or your browser bookmark file, you know that these personalized files are not always stored in the same directory as the program file, nor are the filenames easily recognizable. When upgrading manually, you are almost certain to miss some important files.

The second problem involves personalized operating system and application settings. On a computer running Windows, such settings are stored in the Windows Registry. You cannot simply copy the old Registry over to the new computer, as doing so would overwrite necessary configuration information on the new system, nor does Windows offer a mechanism for copying selected Registry settings to a new computer.

Moving your programs and data files to your new computer without the assistance of a program such as Move Me is tedious and time-consuming. In all likelihood, the result is certain to be disappointing.

The Move Me Way

Move Me is the quick and easy way to move all of your applications, data files, and Registry settings to a new computer. It isn't necessary to tell Move Me which applications to move or to know where your important files are located. Simply install the software on both computers and let Move Me determine what files and settings need to be moved.

Guided by the Move Me Wizard, your upgrade is accomplished with just a few mouse clicks. And to make Move Me even easier to use, the program models its tasks after the steps involved in moving from one home to another, a scenario with which most of us are all too familiar. When the upgrade is complete, you are ready to use your new computer with all of its pre-installed software as well as your old, familiar applications, data files, and settings.

While Move Me is the perfect solution for moving your files to a replacement computer, it is just as useful for copying your existing configuration to a new notebook or other computer that you plan to use in addition to your current system.

Move Me vs. the Competition

Move Me is not the only program that can help you move your files and settings to a new computer, but we believe it is the best solution to a very complex problem.

Move Me's underlying technology is superior to that of other products that are script-based. Such programs can only move an application if their developers have created a script for it. Currently, these script-based products are capable of migrating only a handful of the most popular business applications. To move other programs and files, you must search your drive and select them manually - the very same chore you need to perform if you do not buy a migration product!

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard included with Windows XP can transfer certain Windows settings from your old computer to the new one (including your personalized Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, desktop, display, and dial-up connection settings) and your data files. It does not, however, move your applications. Move Me can transfer all of your Windows settings, all of your data files, plus all of your applications.

Move Me quickly and effortlessly moves all of your applications, data files, and Registry settings to your new computer - not just certain settings or the most popular applications.
